Frequently Asked Questions

What qualifications and certifications are required to work as a Physician/Internist with ENHI in Eswatini?

Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent medical degree recognised by the Eswatini Medical and Dental Council (EMDC). Registration with the EMDC is mandatory before commencing practice, and candidates are expected to maintain active licensure and comply with continuing professional development requirements set by the Council.

What does a typical day look like for a Physician/Internist at an ENHI facility in Eswatini?

Daily duties include outpatient consultations, inpatient ward rounds, managing chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes, and coordinating referrals within the public or faith-based health system. Physicians often support community outreach, participate in health education sessions, and collaborate with nurses, clinical officers, and traditional healers in line with Eswatini’s integrated primary care approach.

How does the local work culture in Eswatini influence expectations for physicians working with faith-based health institutions like ENHI?

Work culture emphasises compassion, humility, and service-oriented values aligned with Nazarene Christian principles, including respectful engagement with patients’ spiritual and cultural beliefs. Teamwork is highly valued, and physicians are expected to adapt to resource-constrained settings while maintaining ethical standards and strong patient communication in siSwati or English.

What career progression opportunities exist for Physicians/Internists within ENHI or the broader Eswatini healthcare sector?

Career growth may include advancing to clinical leadership roles such as Medical Officer-in-Charge or mentoring junior staff through EMDC-accredited supervision pathways. Some physicians pursue postgraduate training in internal medicine via regional programmes (e.g., University of Pretoria or University of KwaZulu-Natal), supported by employer endorsement where available.

What benefits—such as leave, medical aid, or pension—are typically offered to physicians employed by ENHI?

ENHI generally provides annual leave in accordance with Eswatini’s Employment Act, access to basic medical coverage for staff and dependants, and enrolment in the Eswatini National Pension Scheme (ENPS). Additional benefits may include housing allowances or transport support, depending on facility capacity and funding arrangements.

How do I apply for a Physician/Internist role with ENHI, and what do employers in Eswatini prioritise during selection?

Applications are usually submitted via ENHI’s official channels or through the Ministry of Health’s recruitment portal when positions are advertised. Employers prioritise EMDC registration status, proven experience in rural or underserved settings, cultural competence in Eswatini communities, and alignment with faith-based service values over purely academic credentials.
